Cleaning a pellet stove: a step-by-step guide
A pellet stove needs more maintenance than a wood-burner. What to clean, how often, and which parts need a technician.
A pellet stove requires the burner to be cleaned every 2–3 days of use, the ash collector weekly, and the heat exchanger monthly. The flue should be inspected and cleaned annually by a professional.
A pellet stove is convenient: it lights and shuts down on its own, regulates the temperature and burns only what it needs. But it has more parts than a wood-burner and needs more regular maintenance to work well.
If it is not cleaned regularly, efficiency drops, pellet consumption rises and it can eventually break down or throw errors that stop it lighting.
The parts that need cleaning
The burn pot
This is where the pellets burn. It collects ash and combustion residue that can block it and stop the stove lighting. Empty and brush it every 2-3 days of continuous use, or weekly if you use it less.
The ash pan
It collects the ash falling from the burn pot. Empty it at least once a week in normal use, more often with heavy use. When it is full the stove may stop working properly.
The heat exchanger
These are the plates or tubes the heated air passes through before leaving via the fan. They collect dust and soot, which reduces thermal performance. Clean monthly with a long brush or a scraper.
The combustion chamber
The inside of the stove. A general clean at the start and end of the season. All the combustion residue built up over the winter must be removed.
The flue
Unlike logs, pellets produce less soot but more acids and condensates in the flue. An annual professional sweep, just like any chimney.
Annual maintenance: what the technical service covers
Once a year it is worth having a technician carry out a service covering:
- Cleaning and checking the burn pot and the electric igniter
- Checking the auger motor (pellet feed)
- Cleaning the heat exchanger
- Checking the convection fan
- Sweeping the flue
- Checking gaskets and seals
How to tell if the stove needs cleaning
Common signs: the stove throws ignition errors, the burn pot fills quickly with clinker, there is more noise than usual, the flame is uneven or a different colour from normal (dark yellow instead of bright orange), or pellet consumption rises for no clear reason.
How much does a pellet stove burn if the flue is dirty?
A stove with a dirty heat exchanger or flue can burn 15-25% more pellets for the same heat output. Regular cleaning pays for itself.
Can I sweep the flue myself?
Cleaning the burn pot, ash pan and chamber, yes. The flue needs specific tools and access to the chimney top: better done by a professional.
What happens if I don't sweep a pellet stove flue?
The acidic condensates from pellets can attack the flue if they build up. Partial blockages also reduce the draught and can make the stove throw over-pressure errors or fail to light.
