A well-maintained pellet stove can last more than 15 years. One that is not maintained can develop serious problems within 5. The difference is not the brand or the price: it is annual maintenance.

In this article we explain what a complete pellet stove service includes, what you can do yourselves at home, and what requires a technician.

⚡ Quick answer

Complete annual maintenance includes cleaning the burner and ash pan, checking the flue, extractor motor and sensors, and adjusting combustion. Without this maintenance, the service life can drop from more than 15 years to barely 5.

Why pellet stoves need annual maintenance

Pellet stoves are more complex than wood-burning fireplaces. They have mechanical parts—the auger that transports the pellets, the fans—and electronic components. Each part wears at its own rate. If you ignore maintenance, the most common problem is not a sudden breakdown but a gradual loss of performance that you may not notice until your pellet bill rises or the stove stops heating properly.

What you can do yourselves

Every week (or every 2–3 uses in the low season): clean the burner, removing ash and compacted deposits—the “clinker”—that prevent the pellets from burning properly. Empty the ash container when it is 70–80% full. Clean the glass too: blackened glass reduces radiant heat. Use a damp cloth with a little ash from the burner itself; it works very well.

Every month (or at the beginning and end of the season): clean the heat exchanger—if it is dirty, the stove has to work harder to produce the same heat, and monthly cleaning can improve performance by 10–20%. Check the door seals to make sure they close tightly. Also clean the section of the exhaust flue that is accessible from inside the home.

What annual professional maintenance includes

A professional annual service goes far beyond routine household cleaning. We dismantle the accessible internal parts—the burner, heat exchanger and combustion chamber—and clean them thoroughly. We inspect the auger that transports the pellets so wear can be detected before it fails in the middle of winter.

We also inspect the combustion fan and clean the entire exhaust flue. We check the automatic igniter—the part that wears out most and, when it fails, prevents the stove from lighting—as well as the correct operation of the control panel.

Service report included: detailed documentation of the work carried out, the condition of the parts inspected and any relevant observations. Useful for the manufacturer's warranty and for your insurer.

When should annual maintenance be carried out?

Ideally, have it done at the end of the season (March–April) or at the beginning (September–October). We recommend the end of the season: if the stove had any problems during winter, you will remember them more clearly, and if a part needs replacing, you have all summer to order it without urgency.

If you have the maintenance done in September, book in advance. During the busy season the diary fills quickly and you may not get an appointment before the first cold weather.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a pellet stove be cleaned?

Basic cleaning (burner, ash container and glass) should be done weekly or every few uses. A complete professional service should be carried out once a year, ideally at the end or beginning of the season.

Will the stove perform worse if I do not maintain it?

Yes. A dirty heat exchanger can reduce efficiency by 10–20%, meaning more pellet consumption for the same amount of heat. Over time, mechanical parts also wear and can eventually fail.

Do you work with all brands of pellet stoves?

Yes. We work with all the common brands and models in Catalonia and Andorra: Extraflame, MCZ, Edilkamin, Piazzetta, Invicta, Aduro and many more. If you are unsure about your brand, call us.

Do I need to be at home during the service?

Yes. We need access to the stove and, in many cases, to the exhaust flue. A complete service takes between 1 and 2 hours depending on the model and the condition of the stove.
