A pellet stove is one of the most efficient heating systems on the market, but regular maintenance is essential to keep it working properly. Unlike a wood-burning fireplace, its electronic and mechanical components require more systematic attention.
In this guide we explain how to clean your pellet stove correctly: which parts to check, how often and when it is essential to call a professional.
Basic cleaning (ash pan and burner) should be done daily or every few days of use. Thorough cleaning of the flue and fan should be carried out once a year, ideally by a professional, to prevent blockages and excessive pellet consumption.
How often should a pellet stove be cleaned?
Pellet stove cleaning has two levels: daily/weekly cleaning that you can do yourself, and annual professional maintenance that should be carried out by a specialist technician.

Cleaning you can do yourself
Step 1 — Empty the ash pan (every 2–3 days)
Switch off the stove and let it cool for at least 1 hour before opening the ash pan. Empty it into a sturdy bag. Ash can contain glowing embers even when it appears cold.
Step 2 — Clean the burner (every 7 days)
The burner (burn pot) accumulates compacted ash and combustion residue known as “clinker”. Remove it with a spatula or wire brush when the stove is completely cold. A dirty burner reduces efficiency and can cause sudden shutdowns.
Step 3 — Clean the glass (every 2 weeks)
Use a cleaner specifically designed for stove glass (never ordinary window cleaner, as it could scratch it). Apply it with a soft cloth using circular motions. Clean glass is not only more attractive: it also lets you see whether combustion is correct.
Step 4 — Vacuum the combustion chamber (every month)
With the stove cold, use a vacuum cleaner specifically designed for ash (not a normal one, as fine ash would damage the motor). Vacuum the bottom of the combustion chamber and around the burner.
Step 5 — Check the pellet hopper (every month)
Check that there is no moisture in the hopper, damaged pellets or dust accumulated at the bottom. Damp pellets do not burn properly and can jam the auger.
Annual professional maintenance: what it includes
Once a year, before the cold season begins, a specialist technician should carry out a complete inspection of the stove. This is what proper professional maintenance includes:
- Deep cleaning of the heat exchanger
- Inspection and cleaning of the auger (pellet feeder)
- Cleaning the flue and exhaust pipe
- Inspection of the glass and door seals
- Checking the electrical system and sensors
- Checking the fan and its bearing
- Inspection of the automatic ignition system
- Cleaning the air intake filter
- Issuance of a maintenance certificate (if requested)
⚠️ Important: Failing to carry out annual maintenance may void the manufacturer’s warranty. Most manufacturers require an annual inspection by an authorised technician to keep the warranty valid.
Signs that your stove needs an urgent inspection
- It switches itself off during operation
- It produces more smoke than usual
- The glass gets dirty very quickly (in less than 1 week)
- There is a burning smell different from usual
- It makes unusual noises (clicking, vibrations)
- The display shows errors or the stove will not start
