Bioethanol fireplaces: advantages, disadvantages and real maintenance

We are increasingly being asked about bioethanol fireplaces, especially in city apartments where installing a flue is not feasible. They are very different from the systems we usually work with, and although they do not require chimney sweeping in the traditional sense, they do have their own maintenance needs that many people are unaware of when they install them.

What a bioethanol fireplace really is

It works by burning liquid bioethanol in a metal burner, with no need for a smoke evacuation flue because combustion is clean (it mainly produces water vapour and small amounts of CO2, not soot or particles). This means they can be installed on any wall or as a freestanding feature, without building work or an external outlet.

The real advantage: no building work, no flue

This is why they make sense in an apartment: you do not need a building permit, you do not alter the façade or roof, and installation simply involves fixing the unit to the wall or placing it like a piece of furniture. For someone who wants the visual effect of a real flame without the structural limitations of a wood-burning or gas fireplace, it is the only realistic option.

The drawback hardly anyone tells you about before you buy: efficiency

Bioethanol burns with an attractive flame, but as a real heating system it performs poorly compared with wood or gas. Most manufacturers are honest about this and sell them as a decorative feature that provides supplementary heat, not as a primary heating system. In addition, the cost of bioethanol per hour of use is usually higher than wood or gas for an equivalent amount of heat, so the savings on installation are offset by higher fuel costs if you use it every day.

The maintenance they do need (and nobody explains when selling them)

• Burner cleaning: combustion residue and airborne dust accumulate in the burner openings and can affect combustion if it is not cleaned periodically.
• Inspection of seals and valves if the model has flame control, to prevent fuel vapour leaks.
• Room ventilation: although they do not produce smoke, they consume oxygen from the room and release CO2 and water vapour. They need a minimum supply of fresh air, something many installers do not explain clearly enough.
• Use only certified-quality bioethanol intended for fireplaces, never general-purpose alcohol, which may contain additives that produce more odour and light soot on the burner.

When does it make sense to install one?

When the aim is visual appeal and occasional supplementary heat: a living room in an apartment where a flue cannot be installed, a second home where a wood-burning installation is not worthwhile, or as a decorative feature in a renovation. If what you need is genuine heating to get through the winter, a wood, pellet or gas stove still offers a better cost-to-heat ratio.
