It is one of the most common conversations after sweeping a chimney: the customer looks at their open fireplace, thinks about how much wood they use and asks whether installing an insert would be better. The answer depends on what you are looking for.
The open fireplace: tradition, aesthetics, low efficiency
The classic open fireplace is what most people imagine when they think of a chimney. Visible fire, dancing flames, direct heat. It is the most attractive option aesthetically.
But it has a major limitation: its energy efficiency is very low, between 10% and 25%. That means 75% to 90% of the heat generated by the wood escapes up the flue. It also accumulates creosote faster than any other type of installation.
The wood-burning insert: efficiency and control
An insert is a closed wood-burning stove installed inside the existing fireplace opening. Modern models achieve efficiencies of 70% to 85%. They use considerably less wood to produce the same heat and generate much less soot.
The main drawback is the initial cost: between €2,000 and €5,000 depending on the model and the flue adaptations required. Many users recoup that investment within a few years thanks to savings on firewood.
