The open fireplace: a classic with limitations

The traditional open fireplace is the image we all have in mind: visible flames, crackling wood and direct heat. Its atmosphere is undeniable. But from a technical point of view, its efficiency is low.

In an open fireplace, much of the heat generated escapes through the flue together with the gases. Actual thermal efficiency is between 10% and 25%. In other words, for every 100 units of energy produced by the wood, between 75 and 90 literally go “up the chimney”. In addition, when there is no fire, the open hearth acts as an entry route for cold outside air.

The closed fireplace: more efficiency, less romance

A closed fireplace, also known as an insert or cassette, has a sealed chamber with heat-resistant glass. Combustion air is controlled by dampers, allowing you to regulate the intensity of the fire and make much better use of the wood's energy.

The efficiency of a good insert can exceed 75–80%, making it a genuine source of heat rather than just a decorative feature. Some models distribute warm air to adjacent rooms through convection ducts. The difference in firewood consumption is very significant when achieving the same level of heat in the room.

Energy efficiency: the difference is huge

If you want to heat your home with the fireplace, the closed type has no competition. With the same amount of wood, a good-quality closed insert generates between 3 and 5 times more usable heat than an open fireplace. For homes in cold areas such as the Pyrenees, Garrotxa or Segarra, this is no small detail.

An open fireplace makes sense when the aim is atmosphere — a special evening, the pleasure of a visible fire — rather than as the main heating system.

Maintenance: which requires more work?

Both types of fireplace need annual flue cleaning. There are no exceptions. Soot builds up in either case, and the risks of chimney fire or carbon monoxide accumulation affect both open and closed fireplaces.

What does change is the maintenance of the insert itself: the glass needs periodic cleaning, the door seals wear over time, and the air controls can become blocked. It is not a great deal of work, but it is something an open fireplace does not require.

Can an open fireplace be converted into a closed one?

Yes, it is one of the most common upgrades we see. An insert is installed inside the existing fireplace and the flue is adapted. The visual result is good and the jump in efficiency is immediate. It is not always possible without some minor building work; it depends on the size of the firebox and the condition of the flue, but in most cases it is feasible.
