Wood-burning fireplace vs gas boiler: when each option is worthwhile

This is one of the questions we are asked most often when we go to clean a fireplace. The homeowner looks at the installation and asks: is it worth continuing to use this, or should I switch completely to the boiler?

There is no universal answer. It depends on where you live, how you use your heating and fuel prices at any given time. Let us break it down.

What each system offers

A wood-burning fireplace provides direct, immediate heat with an emotional element that a boiler cannot offer. The fire, the smell of wood, the sound of combustion. For many families, that matters.

A gas boiler is pure convenience: you turn on the thermostat, the house heats itself and you do not have to manage fuel or clean up ash. In urban areas without easy access to cheap firewood, it is the practical option.

Costs: which one comes out ahead

The actual cost depends on three variables: the price of gas, the price of firewood in your area and the efficiency of the system. Here are some indicative figures:

• Firewood: between €60 and €100 per stere (around 800–1,000 kg). With a traditional open fireplace, efficiency is low (10–20%). With an insert, it can reach 70–80%.
• Natural gas: the price varies greatly depending on the market. In 2023–2024 it rose significantly, making firewood more competitive.
• Pellets: they are the middle ground. More efficient than firewood, more convenient and with a more stable price than gas.

When a fireplace makes more sense

• You live in a rural area with access to reasonably priced local firewood
• You mainly use the fireplace in the living room and have a boiler for the rest of the house
• You have a high-efficiency insert (70%+)
• You enjoy the ritual of lighting a fire and managing the firewood

When a boiler makes more sense

• You live in a city without convenient access to firewood
• You do not want to deal with storage or fireplace cleaning
• You have several floors or rooms that need to be heated evenly
• The price of gas in your area is stable and reasonable

The winning combination for many homes

In many homes in Catalonia, especially inland and in the Pyrenees, the most common solution is to have both: a boiler for hot water and the bedrooms, and a fireplace or wood-burning stove for the living room.

With this combination, the fireplace reduces gas consumption during the coldest months, when the price difference between firewood and gas is greatest. On milder days, the boiler can cover the heating needs on its own without having to light a fire.

Maintenance: what each system requires

Wood-burning fireplace: the flue should be cleaned at least once a year, and more often if it is heavily used. The exterior terminal, weather cap and condition of the flue should also be checked. Without this maintenance, the risk of a chimney fire increases.

Gas boiler: mandatory annual inspection by an authorised technician. Radiator bleeding. Inspection of the expansion vessel and burner.

Neither system is maintenance-free. The difference is that a boiler has a standard inspection at a fixed price, while fireplace maintenance varies according to its type and condition.
