Biomass boilers produce less soot than wood-burning fireplaces, but they produce more acidic condensate and fine ash that can damage the flue. An annual professional inspection is just as necessary.
Biomass boilers (using wood chips, pellets or olive stones) are becoming increasingly common as a heating system in rural houses and buildings with high heat demand. They are efficient and sustainable, but like any combustion system they require flue maintenance.
What a biomass boiler produces in the flue
Biomass burns at high temperature and with good efficiency, which reduces the build-up of solid soot compared with an open wood-burning fireplace. However, it produces other residues:
- Fine ash: biomass, especially wood chips, produces very fine ash that can build up in bends in the flue.
- Acidic condensate: when combustion gases cool in the flue, condensate forms. With biomass, it is acidic and can attack the stainless steel of the flue over time.
- Resins: depending on the type of fuel, small amounts of resinous substances may be produced.
Recommended maintenance frequency
It depends on use and the type of fuel:
- Pellets: annual flue inspection. Combustion is clean, but condensate builds up. The manufacturer usually specifies the minimum frequency.
- Wood chips: annual inspection, more often if the chips have high moisture content or if the boiler runs for long periods at low output.
- Very intensive use (>1,500 hours/year): an inspection every six months may be advisable.
The flue of a biomass boiler: particular considerations
Biomass boilers are usually connected to a single-wall or twin-wall stainless-steel flue, with or without condensation. It is important for the flue to be correctly sized for the boiler (draught, gas temperature, diameter).
An oversized flue causes the gases to cool before reaching the outside, increasing condensation and deterioration. An undersized one creates pressure and backflow problems.

- Checking the condition of the stainless steel (internal corrosion, leaks)
