The flue is the least visible part of a fireplace and, paradoxically, the most important. It carries combustion gases from the firebox to the outside and, if it is in poor condition, can become a real danger to your family.
In this article we explain when it needs to be replaced, which signs indicate deterioration and what options are available.
A well-maintained traditional brick flue lasts between 20 and 50 years; a metal or prefabricated one somewhat less. It should be inspected or replaced if cracks, damp, a burnt smell between uses, or poor draught appear.
How long does a flue last?
Its lifespan depends on the material, use and maintenance:
- Traditional brick flue: 20–50 years if well maintained. The inner ceramic lining deteriorates because of the acidity of the gases and heating-cooling cycles.
- Metal liner (stainless steel): 15–25 years. The quality of the steel makes the difference — A1-grade liners last much longer.
- Modular ceramic flue: 30–50 years. It is the most durable option for refurbishment work.
📅 Rule of thumb: If your chimney is more than 20 years old and has never been refurbished, it is worth having the flue visually inspected before each cold season.
Signs that the flue needs replacing
- Damp stains on walls near the fireplace
- Smell of smoke in the room when the fireplace is off
- Fragments of ceramic or brick in the firebox
- Smoke flowing back into the room when lighting the fire
- Visible cracks on the outside of the flue or on the roof
- Visual inspection reveals internal cracks or flaking
Refurbish or replace completely?
In most cases, the most economical and effective solution is not to demolish and rebuild the flue, but to refurbish it with a liner:
- Flexible metal liner: It is inserted through the existing flue. Fast, economical and highly effective.
- Injected ceramic system: A ceramic layer is applied from the inside. Very durable and resistant.
- Ceramic modules: Used if the existing flue can accommodate the pipes. The most robust solution.
💡 A properly carried out refurbishment can last another 30 years and costs much less than a complete masonry rebuild.
Who should carry out the inspection and refurbishment?
Always a qualified professional. Flue inspection requires endoscopic cameras or special mirrors to see the internal condition. It is not something that can be assessed by simply looking from the firebox.

It depends on the policy and the cause of the damage. If the damage is caused by a soot fire (ignited creosote), many policies cover it. Deterioration caused by lack of maintenance is generally not covered.
