If you have a fireplace at home, a wood-burning stove or a boiler, you have probably wondered when it is time to call the chimney sweep. The short answer: once a year, before the cold season. This article explains why and which signs mean you cannot wait.

⚡ Quick answer

The chimney should be cleaned once a year, preferably before the cold season. If there is a burnt smell, poor draught, or it has not been cleaned for more than a year, do not wait: call before lighting it.

Why chimney sweeping is required

In Catalonia, home insurance requirements state that the chimney must be in good condition and inspected periodically. If there is a fire caused by a dirty chimney, your insurer may refuse to pay if you cannot prove that it was properly maintained.

In addition, soot build-up — especially creosote — is highly flammable. It is the main cause of chimney fires in homes. A layer just 3 mm thick already represents a real risk.

💡 Key fact: Creosote builds up faster when you burn damp or green wood. If you use dry, well-seasoned firewood, the chimney gets less dirty and the draught works better.

Exactly when should it be cleaned?

  • September or October is the ideal time: before lighting the fireplace for the first time in the season.
  • If you use it a lot — more than 3 times a week — consider a second inspection in spring.
  • If you have just bought a house with an old fireplace, have it inspected before using it, even if a year has not passed.

Signs that your chimney needs urgent cleaning

Do not wait for the annual inspection if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • Smoke entering the house instead of going out through the flue
  • A burning or smoky smell even when it is not lit
  • The fire is difficult to start or goes out by itself
  • You see black deposits or flakes inside the flue
  • The draught works worse than before

What happens in the Pyrenees and mountain areas

Fireplaces in mountain homes have an additional issue: many properties are only used seasonally. An inactive chimney may contain bird nests, condensed moisture or leaves accumulated at the opening.

If you have a seasonal home in Berguedà, Cerdanya, Pallars or Ripollès, have the chimney inspected before lighting it, even if you had it cleaned the previous year.

What about pellet stoves?

Pellet stoves also need regular maintenance. Manufacturers recommend an annual inspection of the burner, heat exchanger and exhaust flue. Many insurance policies require a documented annual inspection by a professional.

What does professional chimney sweeping include?

  • Mechanical removal of soot and creosote from the flue
  • Visual inspection of the internal condition (cracks, obstructions, moisture)
  • Inspection of the opening, access hatch and closures
  • Cleaning the firebox and work area
  • Detailed invoice for your insurance

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean the chimney myself?

You can carry out superficial cleaning of the firebox, but cleaning the flue requires specific tools. In addition, you need a professional’s invoice for insurance purposes.

How long does a chimney sweep take?

A standard cleaning takes between 45 minutes and an hour and a half, depending on the condition and type of chimney. We give you an estimated duration when confirming the appointment.

Do I need to be at home during the cleaning?

Yes. We need access to the fireplace and, in many cases, the roof. An adult must be present during the service.

How often should a pellet stove be cleaned?

Once a year is the general recommendation. With very intensive use, consider an inspection halfway through the season.
