First frosts in the Pyrenees and the Cerdanya: when to light the fire safely

Anyone who lives in, or has a second home in, the Pyrenees, the Cerdanya or the Alt Urgell already knows this: the cold does not arrive on the same day as in Barcelona or Tarragona. In mountain areas the first frosts can come several weeks earlier than on the coast — and with them the temptation to light the fire without having had it checked since the spring.

Why the cold arrives earlier in the Pyrenees

Altitude explains it: the higher you go, the sooner night-time temperatures drop below zero. In areas such as the Cerdanya, the Pallars or the Alt Urgell it is not unusual to record the first frosts as early as late September, while the rest of Catalonia still enjoys mild temperatures for weeks longer.

Signs that it is time to light the fire

• Repeated night frosts, not just one isolated day
• Daytime temperatures that no longer rise enough to warm the house naturally
• A real need for heating, not just the habit of lighting the fire “because it is that time of year”

There is no need to light the fire at the first sign of cold — but it is worth having the flue checked before that moment arrives, so you do not have to choose between being cold and lighting up without any guarantees.

Before the first fire of the season

This matters especially in second homes that have been shut up for months:

• Check there are no blockages: over the summer, birds and other animals can nest in the flue outlet if it has gone unused for a long time.
• Check the draught: a house closed up for months can have a cold flue with poor air circulation at first.
• Check the condition of the exterior terminal: mountain snow, ice and wind are harder on chimneys than a coastal climate.
• Sweep it if it was not done last year: if the last sweep was more than a year ago, now is the time, before the first use.

Second homes in mountain areas
