Fireplaces in rural homes: what to check
Fireplaces in farmhouses and rural homes have older flues, heavier use and difficult access. A maintenance guide for country homes in Catalonia.
Fireplaces in rural homes need at least an annual inspection, and every six months if they are used for more than 4 months. Long flues or those with bends accumulate more residue. Wet firewood produces more creosote.

Why rural homes are a special case
- More intensive use: in cold areas, the fireplace may be used for 4–6 months in a row. That means more soot and creosote.
- Older flues: many farmhouses have flues that are 50–100 years old without a special lining. This means a greater risk of cracks.
- Flues with bends: in older houses, the flue does not always rise vertically. Each bend accumulates more residue.
- Access to the exterior terminal: in homes with steep roofs, the terminal may be damaged without you knowing it.
How often it should be inspected
- Occasional use (1–2 months): one cleaning per year is sufficient.
- Moderate use (2–4 months): annual cleaning before the start of the season.
- Intensive use (4+ months): cleaning at the start and an inspection halfway through the season.
Damp firewood is the biggest enemy
Damp firewood produces more creosote. A flue used with damp wood can accumulate twice as much residue as one used with properly seasoned wood. Firewood should have a moisture content below 20%.
