Getting the chimney serviced every year is the smartest decision you can make before winter. It is not only about safety — a well-maintained chimney performs better, burns less wood and lasts far longer.
In this article we explain what a full service covers, what it costs in Catalonia and how to choose the right professional.
Complete annual maintenance includes a visual inspection, flue cleaning, debris removal, draught checks, and a final report with a certificate. In Catalonia, the price is typically between €80 and €180 depending on the type of fireplace or stove.
What does a full annual service cover?
A professional chimney service is not just "putting a brush down the flue". A complete service has several stages:
1. Initial visual inspection
The technician examines the outside of the flue, the chimney top, the fireplace opening and the walls. Cracks, damp or signs of deterioration are spotted before any sweeping starts.
2. Sweeping the flue
Removing the soot and creosote built up on the flue walls with professional brushes and tools. The work is done from above (the roof) and from below (the fireplace), with the whole working area protected.
3. Cleaning the fireplace and collecting the waste
Removing all the waste from the fireplace and the lower part of the flue. We leave everything clean — no soot on the floor, walls or rugs.
4. Checking the draught
We check the draught is correct by lighting the chimney briefly. If the smoke does not rise properly, we identify the cause and tell you the solution.
5. Report and certificate
When we finish, we explain the condition of the chimney and issue a sweeping certificate if you need one for your insurer or the building's management.
How much does the annual service cost?
The price of an annual chimney service in Catalonia varies with the type of installation, the length of the flue and how accessible it is:
- Standard wood-burning chimney: €80–150 (flue up to 6 m)
- Chimney with a long flue or difficult access: on request
- Pellet stove: €100–180 (includes a system check)
- Wood-burning stove / insert: €80–130

When is the best time to have it serviced?
The ideal answer is between July and September, before the autumn rush starts. The advantages of doing it in summer are:
- More availability and quicker appointments
- You reach October with everything ready — no rushing
- If any repair is needed, there is plenty of time
- Prices tend to be steadier outside the peak season
If it slipped your mind and it is already October or November, call us anyway — we can usually offer an appointment within a few days, even in the busy season.
What happens if I skip the annual service?
An unmaintained chimney builds up creosote (highly flammable), can block the flue and create carbon monoxide risks. On top of that, many home insurance policies will not cover damage unless you can show regular maintenance.

How to choose a good chimney sweep
Look for a firm with demonstrable experience, one that gives the price before starting (with no paid "inspection" visits), issues a certificate and can be reached after the job. Be wary of unusually low prices — they usually mean an incomplete job.
