What exactly does a professional chimney sweep do? What the service includes, how long it takes, when to call and what to expect from a chimney-sweeping visit.
A professional chimney sweep cleans the flue, checks the installation, inspects the external terminal and informs you of any problems found. The service takes between 45 minutes and an hour and a half. The price is always agreed before work begins.
Many people do not know exactly what a chimney sweep does when they come to your home. They know they clean the chimney, but not what that involves, how long it takes or what to expect from the service. We have been doing this work in Catalonia and Andorra for more than twenty years. Here we explain it.
What does a professional chimney sweep do?
- Preliminary visual inspection: we assess the type of installation, the condition of the flue and any issues the customer wants to discuss
- Protection of the area: we cover floors and nearby furniture so soot does not dirty the room
- Flue cleaning: specialist equipment (brushes of different diameters, high-powered vacuums) from the base to the exterior terminal
- Combustion chamber cleaning: inside the fireplace, insert or stove, ash tray and burner if it is a pellet appliance
- Flue inspection: visual check of its condition, obstructions, cracks, nests or unusual deposits
- Exterior terminal inspection: condition of the chimney cap and correct positioning
- Verbal report to the customer: we explain what we found and whether anything requires additional attention
What is not included by default: treatment of stage-three creosote, crack repairs, replacement of seals, replacement of the chimney cap or flue lining. If we identify any of these needs, we tell you before doing the work and give you a separate price.
When should you call?
- At least once a year, before the winter season
- If it has not been inspected for more than a year, even if you notice no symptoms
- If smoke enters the room or the draught is not working properly
- If you notice a smell of smoke when the fireplace is off
- If the glass turns black very quickly
- After a chimney fire, even if there appears to be no damage
- Before buying or selling a house with a fireplace
